Pisco (San Martin), Peru
Named after the liberator General San Martin, this area is significant in Peruvian history as the birthplace of Peru's struggle for independence. San Martin is also the gateway to the ruins of Machu Picchu. From San Martin, explore the Paracas Peninsula, sail to beautiful Islas Ballestas, fly over the famed Nazca Lines, or travel by land to Lima, Cuzco and Machu Picchu.
Machu Picchu
This abandoned ancient Inca citadel, perched high above the remote Urubamba River, is graced with the remains of aqueducts, temples, a jail, cemetery and amazing observatories. It lay undisturbed until discovered by Yale archaeologist Hiram Bingham in 1911.
El Candelabro
Only visible from the sea, this giant figure etched into the desert hills is believed to date from around 500 A.D.
Nazca Lines
Still the subject of much debate, these immense drawings of animals, birds and geometric figures range up to 1,000 feet across and inspired Erik von Daniken's best-selling book, "Chariots of the Gods."
